The high rate of unemployment and ongoing housing challenges for many in less formal settlements in South Africa, motivated the IHS team to provide some practical building related training to residents in one of South Africa’s poorest communities.
The training in the Kaya Sands settlement in Johannesburg, facilitated by TSA Africa, was centered on making and laying bricks to enable shack dwellers both to build new homes as well as to start their own brick making businesses. In addition to the training, we also supplied easy to use mechanical brick making tools and materials.
The initiative, is part of our community outreach to extend social and economic development to areas beyond those in which our business operates.
This project will receive our ongoing support over the coming months and we plan to assist residents to construct at least 10 new homes.
